Dr. Abrams is currently the NCI Acting Director for Clinical Research and also is Associate Director of the Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program (CTEP) in the Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis (DCTD). After completing his medical oncology fellowship (University of Maryland, 1984), Dr. Abrams joined the University of Maryland faculty from 1985-1992 where he directed their Breast Cancer Evaluation Program and was Associate Professor of Medicine and Oncology. In 1993, he joined NCI and was responsible for managing the breast cancer treatment trials portfolio for the Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program. In 2004, he was appointed Chief of the Clinical Investigations Branch which directs the NCI-supported Clinical Trials Cooperative Group program. In 2008, Dr. Abrams became Associate Director of CTEP, DCTD and more recently, in 2010, was named Acting Director for Clinical Research, DCTD. Dr. Abrams is responsible for leading a broad, multidisciplinary clinical research effort to coordinate a nationwide, and international, phase 1-3 clinical trials program testing new treatment approaches for cancer. Dr. Abrams has authored over 80 original publications in the field of breast cancer and clinical trials in general.
