To which NIH grants should I apply if I am a...

… a surgical oncologist wishing to begin a clinical trial? Early clinical trials can be supported by the R01, R21, or P01 funding mechanisms, as well as by the SPOREs. Investigators should also consider proposing their idea to one of the NCI Clinical Trials Cooperative Groups, which sponsor cancer treatment trials with ongoing funding that does not overlap with R01 or P01 grant mechanisms.

… predoctoral student looking for supervised research training? The F31 grant ("Predoctoral Individual National Research Service Award").

… recently graduated doctoral-degree holder seeking laboratory training on my way to independent research in clinical oncology? The K08 grant ("Clinical Investigator Award") or F32 grant ("Postdoctoral Individual National Research Service Award").

… clinician interested in pursuing patient-oriented research in surgical oncology? The K23 grant ("Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award") or the K12 grant ("Physician Scientist Award"). The K12 is geared towards clinicians with research experience, and is open to those with a clinical doctoral degree or its equivalent - e.g., MDs, DOs, doctorally-prepared RNs. The K23 is more entry-level.

… recently trained oncologist wanting to pursue basic research? The K08 grant ("Clinical Investigator Award").

… senior fellow seeking to take a new direction in my research or acquire new research capabilities? The F33 grant ("National Research Service Awards for Senior Fellows").

… newly independent or advanced post-doctoral researcher wanting to start establishing a record of independent research? The K22 grant: "Career Transition Award", targeted to scientists working in an independent position for less than two years.

… mid-career clinical investigator interested in mentoring patient-oriented researchers? The K24 grant: "Mid-career Investigator Award in Patient-Oriented Research".

… professor interested in improving the educational curriculum of cancer researchers in training? The K07 grant ("Academic/Teacher Award").

… professor interested in implementing a small-scale research project at a four-year college? The R15 grant, which bestows the Academic Research Enhancement Awards (AREAs).
