Funding Opportunities

The Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program (CTEP) awards grants and cooperative agreements through funding announcements referred to as: Requests for Applications (RFAs), Program Announcements (PAs/PARs), and Notices of Special Interest (NOSIs). Each Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), previously referred to as funding opportunity announcements (FOA), has a defined research scope and objectives to help investigators select the appropriate opportunity for an application submission. For example, the most common PAs/PARs used to support therapeutic clinical trials proposed by investigators are:

(A) NCI-sponsored NOFOs:

  • NCI Investigator-Initiated Early Phase Clinical Trials for Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis Programs (R01 Clinical Trial Required)
  • NCI Clinical and Translational Exploratory/Developmental Studies (R21 Clinical Trial Optional)
  • NCI Program Project Applications (P01 Clinical Trial Optional)

(B) NCI-participation in NIH sponsored NOFOs:

  • NIH solicitation on Opportunities for Collaborative Research at the NIH Clinical Center (U01 Clinical Trial Optional)

Please visit Research Funding Opportunities on cancer.gov for a complete list of funding opportunities that NCI sponsors or participates in. No matter which funding opportunity you choose, you are advised to discuss your concept with a program officer assigned to the NOFO to determine if it is responsive to the announcement.

Additional NIH Resources/Tools

  • NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts: The NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts is the official publication for NIH medical and behavioral research grant policies, guidelines, and funding opportunities. NIH Guide announcements (PAs, RFAs and Notices) are published daily. The NIH Guide is also used by NIH Contracting offices and other HHS agencies, to announce their funding opportunities.
  • NIH Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tools (RePORT): The NIH Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tools provides access to reports, data, and analyses of NIH research activities, including information on NIH expenditures and the results of NIH supported research.
  • NIH Small Business Funding Opportunities: The NIH Small business Education and Entrepreneurial Development homepage contains information and funding opportunities for the NIH's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Programs.
  • NIH Data Book: The NIH Data Book provides basic summary statistics on extramural grants and contract awards, grant applications, the organizations that NIH supports, the trainees and fellows supported through NIH programs, and the national biomedical workforce.
  • The NIH Grants & Funding Resource: The NIH Grants & Funding resource provides information on the NIH grant process and the latest policy updates. A valuable resource for new investigators and current grantees.
